Wikipedia is one of the most link-stable destinations on the internet. Its community actively maintains pages, updates URLs, and manages redirects. Linking to a Wikipedia entry is about as safe a bet as you'll find.
Archived content via the Wayback Machine (web.archive.org) is, paradoxically, one of the most permanent link destinations available. Once something is archived, it stays archived. If you're citing important research or referencing a page that might change, an archived URL is a smart fallback.
Owned domains with active maintenance — meaning your own website or a platform you control — are only as stable as your commitment to keeping them alive. But at least you're the one holding the keys.
Which Industries Lose Links Fastest
Industry matters more than most people realize when it comes to link decay.
Retail and e-commerce see some of the highest link mortality rates, driven by constant product turnover and frequent site redesigns. Fashion brands in particular restructure their URLs seasonally.
Startups and tech companies are unpredictable. A startup that raised a Series A last year might be acquired, pivoted, or shut down within 18 months. Links to their blog posts, product pages, or documentation can vanish overnight.
Media and publishing remains volatile, especially as the industry continues consolidating. When a publication gets acquired or shut down, its entire URL structure often disappears with it.
Healthcare and finance, by contrast, tend to maintain more stable web presences — largely because regulatory requirements push these industries toward better content governance.
How to Figure Out Which of Your Links Are at Risk Right Now
Here's a practical framework for auditing your most vulnerable links before they go dark.
Age is your first filter. Any link you shared more than two years ago deserves a spot-check. Pull your old email campaigns, your social archives, your published blog posts, and start clicking. You might be surprised what's already broken.
Platform dependency is your second red flag. If a link relies on a third-party platform — a specific social post, a news article, a startup's blog — it's inherently more fragile than a link to content you own or control. Flag these for closer monitoring.
Domain age and stability matter. A link to a domain that's been around for 15 years and belongs to a major institution is more likely to survive than a link to a two-year-old startup's subdomain. Tools like WHOIS lookups can give you a quick read on domain history.
Redirect chains are a warning sign. If a URL already redirects once or twice before landing on the destination, that chain is one step closer to breaking. Each redirect is a potential failure point.
What You Can Actually Do About It
Knowing your links are fragile is only useful if you do something with that information.
For your most critical links — the ones embedded in high-traffic content, live campaigns, or long-term resource pages — using a link management platform to create short, tracked URLs gives you a layer of control you wouldn't otherwise have. When a destination URL changes or breaks, you can update where the short link points without touching every place you've already shared it. That's a huge deal for anyone managing links at scale.
For archival purposes, proactively saving important pages via the Wayback Machine before you link to them gives you a permanent backup you can reference if the original disappears.
And for ongoing monitoring, setting up periodic link audits — even just a quarterly pass through your most-shared URLs — catches decay early enough to actually fix it.
The Bigger Picture
The web feels permanent. You share something, it lives at a URL, people click it. But underneath that surface, there's constant churn — domains expiring, companies folding, platforms restructuring, content disappearing. The links you're sharing today are already on a clock.
